Periodontitis is destruction of the support of the teeth which contains gums, periodontal ligaments, cementum and alveolar bone.
Plaque gets accumulate on the teeth that contain bacteria. It hardens and become calculus. Pocket between teeth host bacteria. Bacteria release toxins, enzymes, and our immune response affects tissue and bone that support teeth. Gums get puffy, pull away from the teeth and may bleed. Bone and gums gets destroyed around the teeth and eventually teeth fall out. Many people have periodontal disease, but they are not aware of it because in most cases, it’s not painful.
Symptoms of periodontitis are bleeding gums, swollen, red and tender gums, pus between teeth and gums, loose or separating teeth, Partial denture does not fit, forming space between teeth that was not there before, teeth have become sensitive, roots became visible.
Treatment can be a deep cleaning, bone reshaping, bone grafting, placing patient on medication, placing medication in the pockets, gum surgery etc. Patients require more dental visits than normal. In some cases bone and gum can be regenerated by grafting procedure. We perform most periodontics procedures including scaling and root planing, perio maintenance, gum grafting, bone grafting, crown lengthening, cosmetic gum surgery, implants, and other services.
Research suggests that there is a link between diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, and an increase risk during pregnancy such as premature birth rate. Stress may also be linked to periodontitis.
