Orthodontics in Tukwila, WA

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a special branch of dentistry that diagnoses and treats dental and facial irregularities. By using braces, retainers, and other corrective appliances, an orthodontist helps straighten your teeth, correct your bite, and improve the appearance of your smile.

When Should I Consider Orthodontic Treatments?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of 7. When your child is at this age, Dr. Buttar can evaluate his or her bite, teeth, and jaw development. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age, before jaw growth slows down. Early intervention can help prevent more invasive treatment later.

What Are the Benefits of Braces?

Braces correct more severe bite and alignment problems, and generally, you can expect to wear braces between one and three years.

What Types of Braces Are There?

There are two main kinds of braces:

- Traditional braces: These are the braces that most people think of when they picture braces. They are made of high-grade stainless steel and consist of metal brackets and wires.

- Ceramic braces: These braces differ from traditional braces in that they have tooth-colored brackets (instead of metal brackets) and wires.

How long do braces take to work?

Some patients achieve an excellent result within six months, while others take a year or longer. The “average” time frame a person needs to be in braces is approximately 12 months.
